Jaeger LeCoultre 1980s Jaeger-LeCoultre Japanese market Atmos clock, Wajima Lacquerware with Mother-of-Pearl Craft Full set with Original Box and Certificate Atmos Clock

The Atmos clock, introduced in 1928, is a remarkable technological innovation by Jaeger-LeCoultre in the field of watchmaking. Each Atmos clock is also a visually pleasing work of art. For those who appreciate both mechanics and artwork, the Atmos clock is an unmissable choice. Compared to other timepieces, the "daily care" of an Atmos clock is remarkably simple. Just place it horizontally, and the clock will continue to operate without the need for winding.

The Atmos clock I'm sharing today is extremely rare and specifically made for the Japanese market. A similar model appeared in a 2018 PHILLIPS auction, where it had an estimated value of HKD 80,000-120,000 and eventually sold for an impressive HKD 210,000. This particular Atmos clock features the renowned Japanese craft of " Wajima Lacquerware with Mother-of-Pearl Craft." Wajima Lacquerware is a lacquerware technique with over 600 years of history, known for its rich colors and durability. The production process involves 70-100 meticulous steps, all done by hand. It takes two years to prepare the base, followed by six months of applying over 100 layers of lacquer. On top of the Wajima lacquerware, you can also see the decorative elements of "Chinkin" (gold inlay), "Makie" (gold, silver, or colored powder decoration), and "Rōgin" (mother-of-pearl inlay). Chinkin involves carving patterns on the surface and embedding gold powder or gold leaf, followed by polishing with lacquer to achieve a smooth finish. Makie is the process of applying designs and patterns on the surface and sprinkling gold, silver, or colored powders to create a luxurious and layered effect. Rōgin is the technique of processing the shells of soft-bodied animals like snails, clams, and oysters into thin sheets and inlaying them on lacquerware or wooden objects. These crafts require exceptional skills from the artisans, and in ancient times, these objects were treasured and collected by the imperial court and nobility.

This clock features paintings on all four sides, depicting a serene scene of a bright moon, mountains, pine trees, flying birds, children, musicians, and beautiful women—a picturesque world that evokes the tranquil atmosphere of "hidden in the clouds, unknown to the world." The artisans have magnificently captured this enchanting landscape using various traditional techniques, bringing it to life with incredible detail. It is truly a testament to the artist's unwavering dedication and craftsmanship.

This clock measures 27cm in height, 22cm in width, 16cm in depth, and weighs a substantial 10kg.
