Clous de Paris, is a type of twisted rope pattern created by the engine-turned engraving technique known as Guilloché. It refers to a pyramid-shaped pattern formed by intersecting hollow straight lines, resembling tiny nails arranged in a matrix when viewed from above, hence the name. Its inspiration comes from medieval European architectural art. Although not actually originating from Paris, it is commonly found in antique buildings in Paris, giving watches adorned with the Paris hobnail pattern a romantic feel and revealing the wearer's classical aesthetic sensibility.
