At first glance, this watch will likely remind you immediately of the Breguet Type XX. Indeed, few chronographs in the world of pilot's watches can rival the Type XX. However, the Type XX was not exclusive to Breguet; the name doesn't even refer to a specific model but rather to a set of specifications for pilot's chronographs created for the French Ministry of Defense. Thus, besides the most famous contractor, Breguet, other brands also produced watches according to these specifications. While Breguet's versions are generally considered the most collectible, it is now certain that none of the 2,000 watches delivered by Breguet to the French government were actually manufactured by Breguet themselves. The truth is: In 1954, Breguet secured a military contract to supply 2,000 Type 20 watches to the Ministry of Defense. With its headquarters still in France and limited time to fulfill the government contract, Breguet commissioned Swiss watchmakers to produce the Type 20. As a result, these watches were manufactured by Mathey-Tissot, which produced timepieces under both the Breguet name and its own.
William Massena, himself French, is renowned for his passion for Type XX watches and ultimately reimagined these timepieces under the Mathey-Tissot name. Staying true to the original design while incorporating modern practicality and value, he has created an exquisite watch that remains faithful to the original while featuring mechanical upgrades. The case retains the classic 38.5mm diameter, distinctive short-beveled lugs, and a combination of brushed and polished surfaces. The dial, said to be inspired by vintage Breguet Type 20 watches, features a tropical brown hue reminiscent of antique timepieces. Beneath the screw-down case back lies the Sellita SW511 M BH b manual-winding movement.
The watch shared today comes from its original owner and has hardly been worn, maintaining its pristine condition with all accessories included—a truly rare find. Available in-store for try-on.
