If the original Cal. 321 represents the mythology of the Speedmaster, then Cal. 861 is the “hero of reality” that carried the legend forward. The celebrated Cal. 321 was intricate, high-cost, and remains a benchmark for high-end chronograph movements. In 1968, Omega introduced the Cal. 861 to enhance reliability and production stability. Its cam-actuated chronograph mechanism is more durable and easier to service, while the upgraded 21,600 vph frequency delivers improved precision. The design became simpler yet more robust—perfectly suited for a tool watch built for real missions.
