The Ref. 5170J is a particularly distinctive chronograph within Patek Philippe's collection. Its design pays homage to classic 1940s chronographs, pairing a Calatrava-style case with rectangular chronograph pushers and a Pulsometer scale inspired by vintage doctors' watches. Its movement is equally significant, as the Ref. 5170 was Patek Philippe's first men's chronograph powered by a fully in-house developed manual-winding chronograph movement.

The dial features a classic two-register layout, with small seconds at 9 o'clock and a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock. The outer Pulsometer scale works in conjunction with the inner chronograph seconds track: timing 15 heartbeats allows the corresponding outer scale to indicate the wearer's heart rate per minute. This fusion of chronograph functionality and medical timing is one of the defining characteristics of vintage doctors' watches.

The combination of the Pulsometer scale and Roman numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock is particularly distinctive to the early Ref. 5170J. The later platinum Ref. 5170G adopted Breguet numerals, while subsequent versions eventually omitted the Pulsometer scale, making the early 5170J dial an especially faithful expression of the model's original design language.

The watch is powered by the Caliber CH 29-535 PS manual-winding chronograph movement, introduced by Patek Philippe in 2009 as its first fully in-house developed men's manual-winding chronograph movement. Incorporating six patented innovations, including an optimized column-wheel architecture and self-adjusting reset hammers, its introduction marked an important transition toward Patek Philippe's modern generation of proprietary chronograph movements.
