Gold coin timepieces have long stood as one of the most romantic and niche creations within horological art. More than mere timekeeping instruments, they embody the sublime marriage of goldsmithing craft and the aesthetics of time. In the early years, leading maisons crafted coin watches as the ultimate demonstration of their mastery and prowess. Encapsulating a delicate movement within the wafer-thin body of a gold coin represented an extraordinary feat in watchmaking. Early artisans often joined two coins together to carve out space for the mechanism, a labour-intensive and technically demanding solution.
At Baselworld 1957, Piaget broke new ground and reimagined the coin watch with its legendary ultra-thin 9P movement. The brand boldly hollowed and split a complete gold coin, embedding a spring mechanism along its rim to form a hinged coin cover. Tucked within the coin’s golden texture lies the slender movement. A single coin housing a mechanical heart, gold infused with the rhythm of time — this became one of the most remarkable horological masterpieces of the late 1960s.
This Piaget 18K yellow gold coin watch we present boasts a gentle 27mm case, elegant and versatile to wear. Preserved in its original, unpolished condition, the watch retains crisp contours and well-defined lugs, conserving the authentic patina accumulated over decades.
The obverse bears the refined engraved profile of the 1881 Liberty goddess, while the reverse features a sharply sculpted eagle motif with rich depth. The dial remains in excellent condition; only routine servicing will be required to restore perfect running performance.
